What is going on indeed. Sarah chased Hagar away, and in the desert a promise is made to Hagar. What promise? Here's the basic story: Hagar fled and an angel appeared to her in the desert, asking what was happening. Hagar replied, “I’m fleeing from Sarah my mistress." The angel tells Hagar that she should submit to her mistress, and then he continues: “I will greatly increase your zera, and you won’t be able to count them.” וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְ־הֹוָ־ה הַרְבָּה אַרְבֶּה אֶת זַרְעֵךְ וְלֹא יִסָּפֵר מֵרֹב. The angel says: וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְ־הֹוָ־ה הִנָּךְ הָרָה וְיֹלַדְתְּ בֵּן וְקָרָאת שְׁמוֹ יִשְׁמָעֵאל כִּי שָׁמַע יְ־הֹוָ־ה אֶל עָנְיֵךְ: Continuing he says: וְהוּא יִהְיֶה פֶּרֶא אָדָם יָדוֹ בַכֹּל וְיַד כֹּל בּוֹ וְעַל פְּנֵי כָל אֶחָיו יִשְׁכֹּן.
