Hello my dear fellow classmates,
We have had many discussions in class and there is something that I have always wondered about. Do you sometimes think that the Torah is outdated?
There are so many things in the Torah that don’t apply to our lives anymore today. Can you think of a few examples? Does it bother you? Would you like to change it? Im very interested to see what you think!
I think some of the examples might be outdated but the concepts and ideas that we learn from them are not. I think that we can apply everything to our lives today but there has to be a certain desire and drive to do so.
ReplyDeleteI often find myself bothered by certain things in the Torah, but sometimes when I hear other people voice opinions that might actually be similar to mine, I get offended on the behalf of the Torah. I do not know why I get like that, because i do the same thing.
So sometimes the Torah might confuse me and make me stop and think, which might lead to my frustration, but at other times I understand the value and truth of the Torah.
Perhaps the school should invest in classes that help teach that. (In our bereishet class we are doing that- learning about things that we can see make the torah true according to modern day science.) More classes should be about that, because it is a core issue to discuss before you begin to discuss other things.
In a very bad comparison: It is like talking about the way the civilization of the alien planet Zorg is set up before you actually know that there is an alien planet Zorg. Why would you care about zorg if no one has completely convinced you that zorg existed?
i agree with zahava...it might seem really hard to connect many of the concepts in torah to our lives today, but there are plenty of ways to connect them. Like zahava said, we just need that drive to do so. if one decides to just look at what the torah says and say that it has zero connection to their life, maybe they are not trying hard enough to find the true comparissons that can be made to life today. If one is not very interested in the torah or does not put in some effort to find these connections then it is not worth it to complain about it. Yes, it will be difficult to find connections, and I am not saying that I can do this with every single thing we learn in the Torah, but I try because I want to follow the Torah in my life, so I need to be able to find ways to connect the information to my life today.
