What Was Life?

Hello,
Every week we all post basically the same exact post, and I just could not think of what to write about (other than the same thing that has been posted). So although we did not go over this in class yet, I thought I would bring up something new.
In the pesukim we were reading, it said that a man could not allow his daughter to be a prostitute in order to get money. When I read this I was shocked. Why did G-d even have to tell them not to do this? It seems to me that it should not even have been a question. It makes one wonder- what kind of society were these people living in? The Jews weren't such good people back then either, if they had to have been told not to do this.

A few questions to ponder that I thought when reading the pesukim:
1. Were the Jews doing the things that G-d was forbidding, and that's why they had to stop, or was G-d just stating it for the future?

2. Were the Jews even good people/ deserving of the Torah at that point in time?

  1. 1. It could be both. To be safe, we can't assume that people know what is right and what is wrong. Even if they weren't doing it then, maybe in the future they would? I don't know. But you can never say that "it should not even have been a question" because some people don't think the same. Perhaps some people don't see how it's wrong.

2.I think that overall the Jews were pretty good people at the time. Nobody is perfect and it is foolish to think that people would be. I think it is easy for us to go back and judge them when they were doing the best that they could. Compared to the other people, the Jews were definitely deserving of the Torah.

  2. I completely understand what you are saying. I was flabbergasted upon reading that as well. However, i do think that whenever we come across ideas like this one in the Torah we must understand that these are very very very different times than ours. Even when we learn things in history we often cannot comprehend how people could live in such an odd manner. That is why we sometimes have to understand that the Torah is a little bit like a history book. Therefore, i dont believe that the Jews were "bad" people because that was their way of life even if they sold their daughters to prostitution. In the future, people will research and learn about our way of life and might be repulsed and maybe amused at our lifestyle.
